Sony starts to end PS2 production after nearly 13 years

Friday December 28th marked the end of the final production run of the Japanese market version of the PS2 coming 12 years, 9 months & 24 days after it's Japanese release. Final shipments of current warehouse stock are expected to run-out within the next 3 months at the current sales rate (though I'm guessing because of collectors & people wanting to buy an extra one that the stock won't make it past the end of January).

The PS2 production lines for the various other regions will be grinding to a halt over the next month or so as well once the current supply of parts runs out.

I don't have current numbers but as of Feb 2011 (so almost 2 years ago) the PS2 has sold 150,000,000+ consoles & over 1,500,000,000 games worldwide putting it at the top of pretty much every non-handheld gaming sales records there are.

Well I think the original PlayStation is the best console ever but the PS2 is very good console. I think they already announced this but that means for sure the PS4 will debute this summer.

naw ps4 will not be out this summer. It is to early yet maybe early 2014 if it where to come out this summer they would have announced way more about it by now

Also i would like to add that ps1 was great for its time but ps2 was just amazing setting the trend of taking counsel to online game play with games like Socom 1 & 2 or everquest i will always have a ps2 but its more of a collection thing at this point

i love the gamecube and wii, but the best i think is the nintindo 64!... i say this because i remember logging many hours in on "Rampage" and "diddy kong racing" in my younger years... that system with thrashed about, thrown into a tv ( k.o. tv, system wasn't scratched) steeped on millions of times, spill pop on about 500 times, and never been worked on or fixed, i still have and use that exact system, tell me any other system could last that long!

maybe it the memories i had with the 64 system, but the only problem i herd about was older age getting to it ( mine never showed it) or dust and grime where the cartridge goes, so you ether clean it or blow on it...

old school all the way!

still have my atari ... and loved the 64 sadly nintendo took a giant crap on itself with the wii and wiiU online support is minemal and online play is few and far between plus they dont have games like GT5
