Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
After tomorrow's patch you're going to notice a new option on the Need for Speed World Launcher / Patcher, "Select Shard".
Shards are essentially new servers that we're going to start deploying for World in the coming weeks and months. Each Shard contains its own available set of Driver slots. Drivers created on one Shard are not available for use on another Shard.
What does the "Select Shard" option do?
It allows players to switch between different servers (Shards) and Regions. These Shards may contain multiple Regions and are displayed in a (Shard) – (Region) format. For example, after tomorrow's patch the options will be "Apex - NA" and "Apex - EU".
Please note that existing Players (accounts created prior to multiple shard support) will be located on the APEX shard. Players created after multiple shard support will be located on the Shard they were created on.
What is multiple shard support?
It's when there will be more than one Shard deployed for NFS World. After tomorrow's patch there will only be the "Apex" but the team is planning on deploying more shards in the coming weeks / months.
Will this affect my login information at all?
Your Login information remains the same for all Shards/Regions.
If my account is on the Apex shard will I be able to play on the new shards when they are deployed?
Players will be able to log into new shards and will need to create a new Driver to play. Drivers only exist on a specific shard; Drivers created before multiple shard support will be on the Apex shard.
What about my Friends List?
Your Friends List will also specific to each Shard. Only Drivers located on the same Shard can be added.
What about my Performance / Visual parts, Skill Mods and in-game cash?
Your Drivers’ inventories will also be specific to a shard. For example, if your Driver is on the Apex shard, your parts will only exist on the Apex shard. If you log onto a new shard you will need to create a new, unique driver.
What about my SpeedBoost & Gifts?
Any SpeedBoost balance & unclaimed gifts are available on any Shards/Regions.
Will I lose anything if I log into a different shard?
No, if you log into a new shard you'll essentially have to create a new driver for that shard.
So what do the Regions do now?
Regions determine only who is visible in Free Roam and who they are matched with for Multiplayer/Race Now events. This restriction only applies to normal matchmaking. Private Events can include players from any Region (within the same Shard).
Can I play against players on different shards?
Players cannot see/match make with players on different Shards, even when the Region selected is the same.
If you have any questions about Shards you can get answers by asking @NFSWorld on Twitter, posting on the NFS World Facebook page or join the discussion on the Forums.

I don't see you post anywhere.
and the answer to what is up there is simple
Sorry I have to say this, but are you FUCKING KIDDING ME!!!!!!! You are essentially locking in the players to one server and thereby cutting off the ability to grow communities, crews, friends who join and are forced to a different server other than APEX when multiple Shards come online

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
So let me get this straight.
Effectively, this means almost nothing right now, but, once new shards come online we'll be able to create new drivers on those shards, independent to any that we already have, thus meaning if we want to have the cars and parts we have on one shard, we'd need to re-buy them for all other drivers we create?
The ONLY thing changing for the moment is that we'd be able to race against people whether they're on EU or NA.
I'm still trying to see a good part to this...
Edit: I didn't even think about that part Dan. Hell, I'd be tempted just to create a basic driver on each shard just to be able to communicate with others.

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
Well if I read it correctly Dax as of tommorrow when they implement the APEX NA and EU servers there is the possibility that you along with all the others in the EU will be locked out of the NA servers unless you create a new driver account, and vise versa for all of us NA players.

As I read it, it'll just be people who are on one shard that are locked into it, but can change the region to alter who they see in free roam. For example, ff in a few months time there is the option for:
Apex - NA / EU
Barrier: - NA / EU
Cruise: - NA / EU
Drift: - NA / EU
then if a new player creates a driver on Cruise, all of us on Apex wouldn't ever see them unless we create a new driver on Cruise and go find them, ensuring we have the region set to the same one as the new driver.
From what I can see, its just another HUGE way of wringing out our wallets.

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
Add the fact that there are 2 servers for each. APEX NA & APEX EU. You may be on APEX EU instead of APEX NA and we will not be able to see you or race with you.

No no, what I mean is there may still be an option like we have at the initial log in. At the moment there are just 2 servers - EU and NA - but I can freely switch between those 2 servers to change who I can see in free roam.
From what I'm reading, you're only locked into the specific shard, not server. Apex is the shard, NA & EU are the servers (currently) on that shard.

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
i get what dax is talking about....
meaning tomorrow they will only bring in the APEX... and US right now will be in APEX... everything we own and have worked for up to now... will be in the APEX shard... WHICH is a MULTI-Region ... APEX-NA and APEX - EU ... just how the servers are set up now.... later down the line when they introduce more Shards... we will have to start from day 1 in those other ones that ARENT apex shard

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
Bingo.
We'll just have another option at the log in screen to select which shard we hook on, and region server we log into.
Our only problem will be to play with people who are using all future shards

yeah or which shard our crews will run under
maybe that will mean crews in different shards??
like teku - apex , teku - drift, teku - cruise .... etc
Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
What benefit do these shards even give?

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
By the way, its been officially confirmed by Drew - accounts will only be specific for shards, not regions. If I want to carry on playing with you guys, I simply log into the NA server as always.
I think having a crew spread over different shards might be kinda tricky, although not impossible. It'd make events kinda hard to plan perhaps..

Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
Whew at least I will still be able to race with everyone here, but new players who start playing when they create new servers will be screwed and so may future recruitments

I like that one, haha, So I am guess we will crew divisions in each shard meaning more co leaders.

Someone, please... Definitions. I'm lost here.
Shards?
Is this going to be like what they did for freeroam chat like EN, EU, CA, etc. and channels 1-20?????
Mind officially blown
Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
This would mean less server lag, anyway multiple divisions of crews huh, this is gonna be.....I don't know what word to use lol
Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
OK. There will be different shards containing X number of servers.
At the moment, there is just one shard, containing 2 servers. This shard will be called Apex, and the 2 servers will be NA and EU.
In the future there will be other shards added, each containing X number of servers.
All current drivers will be on Apex shard.
You will be able to switch between servers, but not shards.
You will be able to create another 3 drivers on any other shard, but will not be able to transfer a driver across shards.
Thats about the crux of it.

I made a little infograhpic, hope this is right as this is what I understand so far.
Re: Introducing Server Shards to Need for Speed World
Thats pretty much it, except new users will also be allowed to create a driver on Apex shard.
